George Mayo, Sr., 86, of Marysville

July 24, 1937 - August 11, 2023

George Justice Mayo, Sr., 86, of Marysville, a former Portsmouth resident, passed away Friday, August 11, 2023, at Heritage Senior Living of Marysville. George was born July 24, 1937, in Orange Park, FL, a son of the late Woodrow Wilson and Evelyn Margaret Porter Mayo.

George retired from the US Military, having served in the Navy Seabees on the USS Davis during Vietnam, and in the Ohio National Guard. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star, Armed Services Expeditionary Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He also retired as a boiler operator from Dayton Power & Light Co. George enjoyed doing plumbing jobs in his spare time, reading westerns and doing macrame, having learned many knots while in the Navy.

His wife of 51 years, Charlotte Louise Price Mayo, preceded him in death on November 24, 2012. The couple was married on September 21, 1961, in Portsmouth.

Surviving are his three children, Elena “Ellie” Mayo (Johnny Forrest) Sparks of Raceland, KY, Elaine (Vic) Jimenez of Marysville and George J. “Bose” (Amanda) Mayo, Jr. of Portsmouth; a brother, Howell Mayo of Hickory, NC; seven grandchildren, Darrin (Sarah) Shank, Hannah (Doni O’Loughlin) Sparks, Kali Rae Mayo, Hayley Sparks, Zachary (Maddie) Mayo, Ethan Jimenez and Diana Jimenez; three great-granddaughters, Stella Rose Sparks, Layla Grace Ferguson and Lucy Mairead O’Loughlin; a brother-in-law, Tony (Judy) Price of Smithville, TN; and a sister-in-law, Melinda Price of Portsmouth.

George was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Mayo; and a brother-in-law, Charlie Price.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 11:30 A.M. in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Dennis Dawes, Minister, officiating. Military honors will be provided by the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth. The procession will depart from the funeral home at 11 A.M.

The flag of the U.S. Navy will fly at the funeral home in honor of Mr. Mayo’s service to our country.
