Green Local Schools has announced it will shut down its district-operated preschool program on March 20, 2026, marking the end of its Early Childhood Education (ECE) services for local families.
In a letter to parents, Superintendent Jodi Armstrong said the decision came after months of review and was driven by financial concerns and new state requirements tied to changes in how preschool programs are regulated in Ohio.
The preschool program has served families whose incomes fall within 200% of the federal poverty level, providing early learning opportunities for some of the district’s youngest students.
District leaders say a combination of factors led to the closure, including uncertain state funding, increased administrative requirements, and projections showing the program would operate at a deficit if it continued.
The changes stem in part from a statewide shift in oversight. Preschool programs are transitioning from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to the Ohio Department of Children and Youth, bringing new rules for licensing, curriculum standards, and inspections.
According to the district, those changes have added additional costs and operational challenges.
School officials emphasized the decision was not made lightly but said it was necessary to protect the long-term stability of the district’s K-12 programs and student services.
Green Local Schools says staff will work with affected families to help them find alternative preschool options and navigate next steps.
Parents with questions or needing assistance are encouraged to contact Green Elementary.
