Homeless and Addicts Keep Officers Working Hard

 Officers stayed busy looking into issues involving homeless individuals and those struggling with addiction.  

At 10 am, a caller reported someone asleep behind the former Marting’s Building. Police spoke tot eh woman, and she agreed to move along.  

At 10:30 am, officers responded to a report of an overdosed man in an alley behind 5th Street. The man woke up and left the area. His wife attempted to track him down in order to keep an eye on him. 

An hour later, callers reported an elderly man leaning against a sign on 11th Street. Police spoke to the man, who said he was fine and just out there panhandling.  

At 11:46 am, Gilbert Avenue callers reported that a man was in the yard high on drugs, and his wife and family wanted him to leave. Officers didn’t think the man seemed intoxicated, but felt he was having a mental health issue. 

The advised him to leave the area. His wife told police she feared for her live and they explained the process for obtaining a protective order. 

At 8:30 pm, a Timmonds Avenue caller reported an apparently high man had climbed on a neighbor’s boat parked on their property. Officers took the man into custody.  

Just a minute or two later, a caller reported a man and woman sleeping on the back porch of a condemned home on 6th Street. Police detained the pair but eventually released them.  

However, the pair returned to the home the next afternoon despite being warned away and officers took them both into custody.  

Workers from Norfolk Southern reported finding drug instruments and drugs under the Young Street Overpass near the homeless camp a 4 am.   

At 10 am, officers noticed someone had removed boards from a boarded-up vacant house on Grandview Avenue. However, they determined it was too dangerous to enter the building to investigate further.
