Homeless Struggle To Stay Warm

Officers came to the aid of a mentally ill man with frostbite and dealt with the persistent problem of homeless people at the Post Office. We break down the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing. 

Suspicious Activity

Police Help Mentally Ill Man with Frostbite

Just before 7 am, police responded to a report of a disturbance on 3rd Street. Officers discovered a man in the midst of a drug-induced mental health episode. The man was also suffering from frostbite. 

Police transported him to SOMC for treatment and notified his parole officer. 

Deer Goes Down

Officers responded to Hill View Retirement Center for a report of an injured deer that need to be put down. 

An officer took care of the situation and arranged for City Services to Pick up the deer.

Post Office Problems

At 2:28 am, a Post Office employee reported several people being loud in the lobby of the building. Police spoke with 3 individuals and asked them to leave. 

An officer responded to a report of a woman passed out inside the main doors of the Post Office at 3:11 pm. The caller said she had a grocery cart with her. 

The homeless woman explained to the officer she fell asleep while drying her jacket. She moved along at the officers’ request.

Hey, That’s My Stuff!

A Harrison Street resident reported 2 blue Pelican kayaks stolen from their home at 3:18 pm. An officer took information for a report. 

Dangerous House

Officers received a report that people had removed boards from a condemned Linden Avenue home and gone inside. 

When police arrived at the scene, they noted boards missing from the back of the house. They didn’t find anyone on the first floor.  However, they could not check the upstairs of the home due to unsafe conditions. 

Under the Influence

Just after 6 pm, a caller reported a man acting oddly in the 1700 block of Kendal. Officers said the man was clearly under the influence. They released him to the care of his sister and brother. 

No Place to Go

An officer found a woman sleeping in the lobby of the PNC Bank on Gallia at 6 pm. The officer attempted to help the woman find a warm place to stay, but she refused to speak to the police and walked away.
