What began as an ordinary day in Pike County quickly turned unsettling after residents discovered a mysterious military device near their home — an object so concerning that it prompted a response from the U.S. Air Force, ending in a controlled explosion.

The discovery happened near Ryan Drive off Morgan Fork, an area familiar to locals for its quiet rural setting. Residents initially noticed the unusual object on the ground and reported it to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, unsure of what they were looking at but sensing it could be dangerous.

Deputies responded and quickly realized the item was not something they were equipped to handle. The device was described as flare-like, metallic, and unfamiliar. After assessing the situation, law enforcement contacted federal authorities, and Air Force personnel were dispatched to the scene.

Once military technicians arrived, they secured the area and carried out a controlled detonation, destroying the object to eliminate any risk to nearby homes or residents. The blast was deliberate and carefully managed, but it left many locals shaken — especially after learning the device was likely of military origin.

According to individuals familiar with military equipment, the object appears consistent with an aircraft countermeasure flare — a pyrotechnic device designed to burn at extreme temperatures to protect aircraft from heat-seeking threats. These devices are sometimes released during training or flight operations and, in rare cases, can land on the ground without igniting.

What raised additional concern locally is that this was not an isolated incident. Residents in neighboring areas of southern Ohio have reported similar military items being discovered, each requiring federal response. In every case, authorities stressed the same message: do not touch, move, or attempt to handle unfamiliar objects, especially those that may be military hardware.

No injuries or property damage were reported in Pike County, but questions remain. Officials have not publicly explained how the device ended up on the ground or whether additional incidents could occur. The Pike County Sheriff’s Office continues to work with federal agencies as they review the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

For many residents, the most unsettling part wasn’t just the explosion — it was realizing something capable of causing serious harm had been sitting quietly in their community.
