Betty Smith talks with Pastor Joshua Lawson about the recent damage to the iconic Bell Tower of the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Portsmouth.
According to their biography, “In August 1886 the cornerstone was finally laid for a new church building on the present site. The completed structure was dedicated in September 1887”.
The church, among others, have been a staple of the Portsmouth skyline and history for many generations. We were all impacted when photos of the damage sustained to the church during a strong storm Saturday evening made their way across social media.
In most cases, as steeples or Bell Towers collapse, the normal action is to “cap” them of and move on. That is not the case with this church, the will of the congregation, and the community at large.
