Jack Matiz

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Jack “Randy” Matiz, who left us on Saturday January 25, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on February 12, 1949, in Portsmouth, Ohio, Randy was a cherished member of the community and a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Randy’s life was defined by his passions and his entrepreneurial spirit. From a young age, he showed a knack for business, selling coloring book pictures and even his sisters’ pop bottle collection. This early ambition blossomed into a successful career as the owner and salesman of Randy Matiz Motors. Not only in his career where his love for cars shown through, he was an avid Indy and Formula One race car fan. He enjoyed many antique cars as well. His hands were skilled not only in selling but also in wiring, having served as a retired Union Electrician with Local IBEW #1925 in Martin, TN.

A proud alumnus of Portsmouth High School, Randy was an ardent fan of Ohio State University football, often sporting his favorite team’s colors. His sharp-dressing flair was well-known among friends and family, even prompting his brother Phil to occasionally “borrow” his wardrobe-only to face Randy’s playful scrutiny once discovery ensued. He was also owner of one of the first retail merchant stores with locations in Portsmouth and Athens.

Above all, Randy’s greatest pride was his son, Josh Matiz, and his beloved grandchildren. His support for them was unwavering; he never missed a game or event, always cheering them on with a heart full of pride and joy.

He was survived by his loving son and daughter in law, Josh and Renee (Nee Thompson) Matiz, his adoring grandchildren, J.D. and Lauren Matiz all of Portsmouth, his brothers and sister in law, Larry and Marilyn Matiz of Wheelersburg and Phil Matiz of Portsmouth, his sister Debby (Nee Matiz) Schulze of Portsmouth, and the mother of his son, Cheryl (Nee Myers) Matiz of Portsmouth, nephews: Stefan (Kristina) Maroudis of San Diego, CA, and Chase Matiz of Portrales, NM, nieces: Ericka Matiz of Piketon, Jennifer (Michael) Estep of Wheelersburg, Andrea (Steve) Otis of Monkton, MD and Jordan Schulze of Alexandria, KY, many other great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
