Corrections Officers at the Scioto County Jail are ‘disgusted’ by the death of Kevin Bailey. Bailey, 56, of Portsmouth died from injuries suffered during a May 26th incident at the jail. He was taken to a hospital in Columbus where he later died.
According to his sister, Karen Skaggs, his skull was split open, he suffered multiple brain bleeds, and six ribs were broken. According to the Sheriff’s Office, these injuring happened when Bailey attempted to run away from guards and hit his head on an open door during a scuffle.
His sister has her own suspicions about how he died. She said sources told her that two guards drove him into the floor and the door. Then he was kicked while he was down.
Officers Are Appalled
A separate source with inside knowledge of the incident confirmed that version of events to me earlier today. The source also said that other corrections officers at the facility are appalled by the behavior of their coworkers.
“Please know that most of the people who work there are extremely decent people, and the ones who are aware of this situation are disgusted by it. Unfortunately, it’s the good ole boys club.”
The source did not want to be identified for safety’s sake. I was also told that the guards involved in the incident with Bailey are still on the job.
Left To Take The Heat
Missing from the job, according to my source, are Sheriff Martin Donini, Captain John Murphy, and Captain Carter. We’re told all three took the week off. My source said that employees are furious that they were left to take the heat for a situation most of them had absolutely nothing to with.
My source said the jail should release the names of the officers involved.”I don’t want to see innocent CO’s get caught in the crossfire, because without people knowing exactly who did it, then everyone is suspect.”
The source expressed sympathy for Karen Skaggs and the rest of Bailey’s family.
Sheriff Donini announced his retirement last year. Captain Murphy lost the primary election that was finally resolved in May. My source says its time for a change. “The new sheriff can’t get in there fast enough.”
