James White Smallwood, 85, of New Boston, died Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born May 27, 1935, in Portsmouth, a son of the late James Vernon and Edna Looney Smallwood.
Jim was a 1953 graduate of Portsmouth High School and he received a Bachelor of Business Degree from the Ohio State University. He served in the Marine Corps for three years following high school He had been employed at the former Empire Detroit Steel Corporation and Goodyear Atomic Corporation.
An excellent golfer, Jim had served as the staff professional at the Elk’s Country Club in McDermott, as well as other courses.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Joyce Smith Smallwood; three infant children; and his brother-in-law, Rev. Addison “Pete” Keaton.
Surviving is his sister, Verna L. Keaton of New Boston; three nephews and their families, Douglas R. Keaton of Oak Park, VA, Mark R. Keaton of Eva, TN and James Franklin Keaton of Wheelersburg; and a good friend, Andy Smith of Columbus.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date under the direction of the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
