Jealous Rage, Broken Glass, and an Outstanding Warrant: Night of Drinking Ends With Arrest

A late-night drinking session spiraled into violence after one man allegedly accused another of making a pass at his girlfriend, leaving one person bloodied, a trailer window shattered, and the suspected attacker heading to jail on an unrelated warrant. Deputies responded after reports that an intoxicated man had assaulted another man, smashed a window, and fled the scene with his girlfriend and young daughter. When deputies arrived, they found the alleged victim bleeding from a head injury. According to the report, blood was running down the left side of the man's neck, and deputies observed a cut near his left eyebrow along with an abrasion on one shoulder. Investigators also found a broken liquor bottle on the porch, alcohol containers nearby, and a shattered front window. The incident occurred in the Village of Proctorville. According to the victim, everyone had been drinking together when the suspect became convinced he had made a pass at the suspect's girlfriend. The victim told deputies the suspect became enraged, punched out the trailer window, and then threw him to the ground, causing his head to strike the pavement. A woman inside the home told deputies she woke up after hearing the commotion and attempted to separate the two men. She said she was never assaulted. The injured man told deputies he wanted to pursue criminal charges for both the alleged assault and the damaged window. After photographing the injuries and property damage, deputies called EMS. The victim chose to be transported to St. Mary's Medical Center for additional treatment. Deputies noted that both the victim and another witness were heavily intoxicated, so formal written statements were postponed until they had an opportunity to sober up. The investigation took another twist a short time later. Using information gathered at the scene, deputies learned the suspect had an active probation violation warrant out of Fairfield County stemming from an earlier strangulation case. About two hours later, deputies located him outside a South Point residence. According to the report, the suspect voluntarily walked up to the patrol vehicle and admitted the confrontation began after he believed the other man had grabbed his girlfriend's buttocks. He acknowledged grabbing the victim but claimed the victim's injuries may have actually been caused by the man's dog rather than by him. Deputies also observed fresh injuries to the suspect's left hand. He claimed those injuries were caused by his three-year-old daughter. The suspect's girlfriend largely backed up his version of events, telling deputies the victim had touched her inappropriately before the fight began. However, because both appeared heavily intoxicated, deputies planned to obtain formal statements after they had sobered up. Those follow-up interviews never materialized. The suspect later declined to provide a written statement from jail, telling deputies he did not remember what had happened. His girlfriend postponed one interview and then failed to answer later attempts by investigators to contact her. The suspect was arrested on the outstanding Fairfield County warrant and transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where photographs were taken documenting injuries to his hands. The assault investigation remains ongoing. Alcohol Can Complicate Criminal Investigations Investigators often delay formal interviews when witnesses or victims are heavily intoxicated. Doing so helps ensure statements are accurate and reduces the likelihood that important details are forgotten or distorted by alcohol.
