A Memorial Service for Joanne Winters, 91, of West Portsmouth, will be held at 2 P.M. on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon until the service hour.
Joanne was born on December 24, 1931, to the late Fred and June Spradlin Payton. A graduate of Portsmouth West High School, she attended Ohio University and Shawnee State University. She worked as a Manager of Credit and Collections as well as Ombudsman at the former Mercy Hospital for many years and later retired from Southern Ohio Medical Center.
Joanne was a member of Central Church of Christ as well as many other civic organizations, including the SOMC Service Guild, Down By the River Quilt Guild, PALS, Over 55 Club of Nile Township, and was an SOMC Volunteer.
She was an avid quilter, painter, and cook, and she loved to travel and crochet. She was also an active member of the SSU Golden Bears and enjoyed serving as an usher at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
Joanne was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 74 years, John Robert Winters; two brothers, and one sister-in-law; Harry Payton, and Carl and Shirley Payton; and a son-in-law, William Bailey.
Surviving are her children, Barbara Gayle Bailey of West Portsmouth, Jonathon K. Winters of Troy, and Suzanne (Randy) Kingery of West Portsmouth; one sister, Constance (Steve) Compton of West Portsmouth; two brothers, Gary E. Payton of Peebles and Fred Payton of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Ruthann Payton of Georgetown, KY; six grandchildren, Mackenzie (Casey) Jones of Jacksonville, FL, Christopher R. Winters of Columbus, Olivia A. Winters of Denton, TX, Kirby Kingery of Portsmouth, Alexandra Winters and Ariel Winters, both of Troy; and four great-grandchildren.
Joanne will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Down By the River Quilt Guild.
