John Darrel Shanks, 92, of Waverly, Ohio passed away Monday, January 13, 2025 at Traditions at Bristol Village in Waverly. He was born September 19, 1932 in Poplar Grove, Ohio to the late Cecil Christopher Shanks and Catherine Jane Mosteller Shanks. He was united in marriage to Berma Jean Thomas Shanks who preceded him in death on June 9, 2017.
Surviving are his children, Deborah Shanks Martin of Chillicothe, Melodie (Jeff) Noble of Waverly, John (Tammy) Shanks of Wakefield, Thomas Kent Shanks of Latham and Jerry Ray (Sherry) Shanks of Peebles; a sister, Yvonne Brewster of Piketon; grandchildren, Jade Martin (Rob) Willis, Tyler Christopher Martin, John Darrell (Jenny) Shanks III, Sara Beth Shanks, Christopher Kent (Mandy) Shanks, Latosha Shanks (Ryan) Russell, Jeffrey Robert-Christopher Noble, Jennifer Shanks (Dale) Williams, Vince (Tabitha) Shanks, Nicolas (Hannah) Shanks and Cecilia Catherine Shanks (Timothy) Ottens; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Dale Shanks; a grandchild, Tessa Ann Walker; a great-grandchild, Macie Williams; and a brother-in-law, Sonnie Brewster.
Darrel owned Shanks and Sons Post and Lumber Company which operated over three generations and was started by his father and mother. Darrel proudly served his country in the United States Army where he was sent to Japan to fight for his country. Going to church was an important part of his childhood. Darrel and his sister Yvonne enjoyed attending Mt. Zion Church with their parents and their small community of Poplar Grove.
Darrel will be missed by his loved ones and friends. The family wants to express their gratitude to all staff and friends at Bristol Court and Bristol Village long-term care, they were angels to them.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Botkin Hornback Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
