‘Just Take Me to Jail’: Intoxicated Woman Gets Her Wish After Night of Yelling and Threats

An intoxicated woman repeatedly told deputies to "just take me to jail." After several warnings to calm down, that's exactly what happened. Deputies were dispatched after a woman reported that an intoxicated guest had been making threats and causing a disturbance inside the home. When deputies arrived, they found three people at the residence. According to the report, the complainant and another man appeared sober and cooperative, although they disagreed about living arrangements. The third person, identified as Shaylen Utterback, showed what deputies described as obvious signs of intoxication. Investigators reported she had slurred speech, smelled strongly of alcohol, was unsteady on her feet, and repeatedly became loud and confrontational. Utterback admitted she had been drinking. The incident occurred in the South Point area. The complainant told deputies the trouble started after everyone returned home from another residence where Utterback had been consuming alcohol. According to the report, Utterback repeatedly yelled at her, calling her vulgar names despite being asked several times to stop. Even while deputies were attempting to sort out what had happened, Utterback allegedly continued trying to provoke arguments. At one point, deputies overheard her announce that she was "going to file charges" against the complainant. Investigators believed the comment was intended to provoke another confrontation, and an argument immediately followed before deputies stepped in. A short time later, the complainant began walking away in an effort to avoid further conflict. According to the report, Utterback responded by yelling after her, calling her a "bitch" and telling her to "shut the f--- up." Deputies warned Utterback to stop directing abusive comments toward the other woman and told her she would be arrested if the behavior continued. Rather than calming down, investigators say she doubled down. A man at the home, along with an assisting Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper, tried to persuade Utterback to go into a bedroom and separate herself from the situation for the night. She refused. Instead, according to the report, she repeatedly told deputies: "No, just take me to jail because I can't shut up. Just take me to jail." Deputies eventually decided she had crossed the line. Based on her level of intoxication, repeated verbal abuse, refusal to stop after multiple warnings, and continued efforts to provoke another confrontation, Utterback was arrested for disorderly conduct. She was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Lawrence County Jail. You Don't Have to Fight to Be Arrested Many people assume disorderly conduct charges require a physical altercation. That's not the case. Ohio law also allows officers to arrest someone whose intoxication leads them to repeatedly engage in loud, abusive, or threatening behavior after being warned to stop—particularly when that behavior risks escalating into violence. Deputies say multiple opportunities were given to de-escalate the situation before the arrest was made.
