A K9 officer and his human partner are being recognized for their part in tracking down a weapon tied to a murder in Pike County.
K9 Mattis, along with human partner Wildlife Officer Chris Gilkey provided assistance to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation in the search for a firearm that was believed to be linked to a homicide.
BCI asked for help from the Division of Wildlife because their K9 officers are trained to sniff out the scent of raw or burnt gunpowder.
The gun had been hidden in the woods of Pike County for 10 days but it only took Mattis 10 minutes to sniff out the weapon under a rock.
The Division of Wildlife did not name the specific case related to the weapon. In June of last year, Mattis was also able to assist in catching an illegal Ginseng digger.
