Kentucky Police are going back to gather more evidence in an animal cruelty case that’s shocked the nation. Fifteen free-roaming horses were found shot to death at a strip mine site in Floyd County Kentucky on Tuesday.
Images of the incident went viral after photographer Ray Reeder shared them on his Facebook page.
The Floyd County Sheriff gave an update on the investigation into who was behind the horrific act. Sheriff John Hunt said that deputies would head back to the scene along with personnel from Dumas Rescue of Garrett, Kentucky, and veterinarians to attempt to gather more evidence to use n the investigation.
The site where the remains of the horses were found is remote and can only be accessed using all-terrain vehicles.
The Sheriff said it was necessary to coordinate with individuals who have these types of vehicles to transport investigators to and from the crime scene.
Dumas Rescue started a fundraiser to raise money for a reward fund. The group said that if no arrest is made within 6 months, the money will be used to help other abandoned horses who roam former strip mine land. The group said it supplies hay and salt to these animals all winter long.
The Sheriff’s Office said it would be announcing an updated reward amount soon. Sheriff Hunt said, “It has been heartbreaking seeing these beautiful horses killed but it had equally been heartwarming to see all the concerns and see all the support in assisting in the investigation and to give the living horses a good home.
