Kicking Doors, Screaming—Residents Arm Themselves Before Police Step In

screams in the night

A chaotic late-night scene on Sunrise Avenue had residents preparing to defend themselves as an unknown woman screamed and kicked at a home’s door.

Portsmouth Police were called around 11 p.m. after reports of a woman yelling outside a residence.

While speaking with the caller, officers could hear the disturbance themselves and began searching for the source.

When they arrived, they found the woman actively kicking the south side door of the home.

Police said she appeared angry and combative, and due to her behavior, officers detained her on scene.

Inside, residents told officers they feared for their safety and had begun arming themselves, worried the situation could turn violent.

Officers took the woman into custody—but instead of taking her to jail, they transported her to Southern Ohio Medical Center for medical treatment.

The situation serves as another example of how quickly calls can escalate—and how often officers are dealing with issues that go beyond crime and into crisis.
