Young participants in the Wings of Hope program had the opportunity to practice their budding journalistic skills on members of the Scioto County Commissioners at Thursday’s meeting.
The commissioners voted unanimously to honor Wings of Hope and program director Maxine Malone for their outstanding summer program allowing youngsters interested in media to explore all aspects of the field. Over the summer, the program has allowed youngers to cover many local events and pose questions to local leaders.
The young journalists asked commissioners for their best advice for young people. Commissioners advised them to pursue their education, keep a positive attitude, and give back to their community.
Commissioners also fielded questions about why they ran for office, and the difficulties they face in their office.
SCDN’s Betty Smith has mentored the young broadcasters over the summer and said she was honored to be part of the program.
“These children are the future of our industry and the future of Scioto County. It’s important to make sure they have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. We don’t want bright, young people to think they have to leave the area to have a great career in their chosen field.”
