KY 2 will be closed several weeks for repairs
A Greenup County road will likely be closed for several weeks despite the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s promise to fast-track the repairs.
A slip at on KY 2 at North Fork Hill just east of Warnock has left the highway impassable. Crews put barricades at the top and bottom of the hill as well as putting up signs warning motorists of the dangers. You’ll find one at US 23 intersection at Greenup along with detour signs. The closure will affect around 700 vehicles a day.
Engineers and geotechnical specialists spent Tuesday at the scene trying to figure out how much damage there was and the best way to fix it. Officials say the road was already on the list of slip repair projects for 2020. A T-rail was installed 20 years ago to shore up the hillside. Because of the new damage, the project has been moved to the top of the list and repairs will begin ASAP.
Steve Gunnell, the chief engineer for the Kentucky Department of Highways District 9, said, “We know this is an important highway for residents, schools, and businesses in Greenup and surrounding counties. We’re committed to getting it fixed, and reopening the road as quickly as we can.”
Workers will attempt to stabilize the embankment by drilling into the bedrock and placing supports. Despite the plans to fast-track the repairs, the road will likely be closed for several more weeks. Until the repairs are complete, KY 2 will be closed at mile point 8.8 at North Fork hill about 2.5 miles east of the KY 7 intersection at Warnock. All thru traffic should detour using KY 827 and KY 7, or KY 1459, KY 784 and local routes.
