LANGUAGE BARRIER TURNS WHEELERSBURG 911 CALL INTO CHALLENGE FOR DEPUTIES

A late-night 911 call in Wheelersburg turned into a reminder of how difficult emergencies can become when callers and first responders don’t speak the same language. The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office received a call from someone asking for police assistance, but dispatchers reportedly could not fully understand what the emergency was because of a language barrier. Using 911 mapping technology, deputies traced the call to an area on Hayport Road and responded to investigate. When officers arrived, they noticed the lights at the residence were initially on—but then suddenly turned off as deputies approached. Deputies eventually located a man in an alley near the property, but communication problems continued because officers still could not clearly understand what had happened. Fortunately, family members later arrived and were able to interpret for both sides.
