Larry Gene Haywood, 83, of Wheelersburg, died Thursday, May 16, 2024, peacefully at his home, surrounded by loved ones and dear friends Morgan and Lucy Taylor. Larry was a member of Unity Full Gospel Fellowship church in New Boston, Ohio, where he gave his heart to the Lord in October of 2013 and was a generous supporter of the Unity youth group.

He was born July 14, 1940, in Portsmouth to the late Jack “Dewey” and Ruth Hammond Haywood. Also proceeded in death by a brother Danny Lee Haywood, daughter Tonya Sue Haywood, son Kevin Lee Haywood, daughter-n-law Shelly Sue Haywood, grandson William “Billy” Haywood, brother-n-law William “Bill” Craig, sister-n-laws Patty Craig, Sandy Galloway and Romona Burke.

He was a US Army veteran and steelworker retiree of Dayton Walther Foundry, Portsmouth, OH.

Larry bowled on several different teams and leagues with family and friends throughout the years. He also played softball for Dayton Walther Foundry and IPCC Church of 7th Street with his brother and sons. He was an avid fisherman (Lake Eerie was his favorite place) and a deer hunter. He loved his family dearly and would do anything for any of them. He loved and enjoyed the company of many church family friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Lou Haywood; two sons, Larry Dean (Kelly) Haywood and Russell Dewey (Melody) Haywood, daughter-n-law Stephanie Flinders Haywood, all of Wheelersburg, OH; a brother-in-law, Clarence “Butch” (Norma) Craig of Franklin Furnace; a sister-n-law Brenda (Dave) Linkous of Stout, OH; a niece whom was like a daughter to him, Crystal (Greg) Graf of Stout, OH, and many other special nephews and nieces;  grandchildren April Haywood, Matthew Haywood, Brooklyn Crabtree, Zachary (Regina) Flinders, Kirby Phipps, Kyle Phipps, Corey Haywood; great grandchildren Hunter Haywood, Liam Haywood, Emryn Brown, Asher Phipps, Mercedes Tackett, Portia Hurst, Caidence Crabtree, Paisley Hargett, and Lillian Smith.

The Melcher Hammer Funeral Home, Portsmouth, OH, is conducting the arrangements. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4221 Pine Street, New Boston, OH, in the Unity Full Gospel Center brick building across the street from the church on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 4 p.m., with Pastor Richard Stiles officiating. Friends and family may call one hour before the celebration.
