Last-Minute Scramble Saves River Days-Interview with Police Chief Brewer

Last-Minute Scramble Saves River Days

Rising floodwaters caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida threatened to cancel River Days for the second year in a row.  But thankfully, the community sprang into action to save the beloved event with some last-minute moves that required cooperation between the Portsmouth City Government and community organizations like Friends of Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Police Chief Debby Brewer said, “River days is what we’ve been concentrating on this week. Trying to get it to go without canceling the whole thing. We will keep going.”

With floodwaters predicted to hit 41 feet over the weekend, the soundstage and boat ramp will both be underwater. The boat races have been postponed. Organizers are shooting with rescheduling for the last week of October.

The Show Will Go On

However, the rides and entertainment will go, just in a different location. River Days will move front the riverfront to 4th Street Between Chillicothe and Washington Street.

Chief Brewer said that starting on Wednesday morning, that part of 4th will be closed. Folks looking to get to Desco can access it through the alley at the drive-through. She advised motorists to be aware of the blocked streets and plan ahead when making trips downtown.

The planned fireworks have also fallen victim to the floodwaters and are canceled. But entertainment and rides will go on as scheduled in the municipal parking lot.

One bonus, the entry fee to River Days has been waived due to the cancellation of the boat races. Organizers say the pageant and parade will go on as scheduled.

Despite the flooding threat, the weather for the weekend looks to be beautiful. Organizers and Chief Brewer encouraged residents to come out and safely enjoy the festivities in their new location.

Chief Brewer said the PPD would do their best to keep everyone informed of any additional changes on the department’s Facebook page.
