Late Night High Speed Chase. Suspect No Stranger To Authorities

A high-speed chase around Highland Bend and Swauger Valley Rd resulted in several felony counts for Shannon Johnston age 43. Johnston, who just had a birthday 4 days ago, has a long history with law enforcement. This makes his 24th arrest in Scioto County.

Johnston fled from sheriff’s deputies just before 1 a.m. Speeds exceeded 75 miles per hour, according to authorities, along the main roads and several side road switchbacks. Pursuing deputies said Johnston made several evasive maneuvers including an unexpected u-turn in a gravel area and “taking out” a fence.

Portsmouth Police were alerted of the situation and coordinated to prevent him from coming through Sciotoville and gaining access to Highway 52.

At one point, it was reported, that the vehicle may have caught fire during the chase.

Johnston was charged with Grand Theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing and eluding, and parole violation. Each of those charges are felonies. He was also charged with possession of drug abuse instruments and an outstanding warrant from Lawrence County,

The last time Johnston was arrested in Scioto County was also for Grand Theft Auto. Since 1997, Johnston has racked up charges including car theft, receiving stolen property, burglary, weapons charges, assault, and domestic violence.

No injuries were reported to the suspect, authorities, or the public.
