Late-Night Theft, Shattered Glass, and Family Trouble: Deputies Handle Three Calls

A suspicious overnight theft, a smashed vehicle window, and a family dispute over missing money kept deputies busy responding to a trio of incidents that unfolded across the county. According to reports from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the first call involved a theft complaint at a residence where a property owner said someone helped themselves to valuable scrap materials — and even drove off with a lawn mower. The man told deputies his home had previously burned down, leaving a large amount of copper and other scrap metal scattered around the property. When he checked the area, he realized several items were missing, including a beige or tan Craftsman riding mower that had been sitting outside. He told deputies his dogs began barking around 1 a.m., which he believes may have been when the theft occurred. The property owner provided a written statement listing the missing items. Deputies checked nearby homes along the road for security cameras but were unable to locate any footage related to the incident. Concrete Block Through the Window In another call, deputies were sent to Chesapeake after a vehicle owner discovered someone had violently vandalized her car. The woman showed deputies the rear window of her vehicle, which had been completely shattered. Inside the cargo area, deputies found a concrete brick roughly the size of a volleyball, believed to have been thrown through the glass. The vehicle owner said she had parked the car around 8:40 p.m. on March 3 and didn’t notice the damage until about 4 p.m. the following day. She told deputies she is not aware of any possible suspects. She plans to forward an estimate for the cost of repairs and the damage to the vehicle. Grandmother Reports Money and Car Taken Deputies were also called to Chesapeake after a woman reported ongoing issues involving her grandson taking money and her vehicle without permission. The woman told deputies that her grandson, who lives with her, has been taking her car and using her bank cards. She estimated that more than $1,000 had been taken from her accounts. She said she has already contacted her bank, which placed a stop on the cards he had access to. The woman also told deputies she believes her grandson is struggling with drug use and said she wants him to get help. The woman completed a written statement and said she plans to gather bank records to document the withdrawals. She told deputies that although the situation has been tense and he sometimes becomes angry and damages items in the home, he has never physically assaulted her. Because he lives at the residence, she said he has been able to access her vehicle and financial cards. Deputies advised her to contact law enforcement if he returns and additional problems occur.
