Lawrence County Overdoses drop by nearly half

Lawrence County EMS reflected on a very busy 2019 and announced some great news about drug overdoses in the county. Overdose calls have dropped by nearly half since 2017.

The agency has six ambulances positioned in five stations across Lawrence County including Aid Township, Chesapeake, Ironton, Rome, and South Point. They fielded 12,378 EMS calls during 2019 – an average of almost 34 calls per day.

During their first year of operation back in 2011, they responded to just over 10,000 calls. The good news is that in 2019, fewer of those calls were for drug overdoses. While first responders answered the call for 239 drug overdoses. While 239 sounds like a lot of ODs for a county with a population of 60,000, that number is down significantly from 2017. Back then, there were 427 ODs in just one year.

In a post on their Facebook page, LCEMS, praised the agency’s employees as “a bunch of hard-working professionals and it shows with the number of patients they reach each year.”

It also wished everyone a happy and injury-free New Year.

The agency is currently accepting applications for paramedics. Those interested can apply online by clicking this link.
