Letter to the Editor: Portsmouth Council Against Ohio’s Stance on Critical Race Theory

Portsmouth Council Against Ohio's Stance on Critical Race Theory

At their July 11th meeting, members of Portsmouth City Council voted to approve a second reading of “A Resolution expressing the opposition of the Council of the City of Portsmouth to Ohio H.B. No. 327,” which prohibits teaching Critical Race Theory and Leftist Gender Theory to young children in public schools.

Essentially, the council took the stance that Critical Race Theory and Leftist Gender Theory should be fair game to be taught to young children and that the Ohio Legislature should not move forward with such a ban.

Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Tennessee have banned critical race theory.

The following states are currently considering bills or establishing school policies that forbid the instruction of Critical Race Theory: Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

To drill down on this list, the “Blue” Democratic-controlled States are New Hampshire, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Members of the council voting to approve the resolution included Andy Cole, Sean Dunne, Charlotte Gordon, Lyvette Mosley, and Dennis Packard. The only member opposed to the resolution was Joey Sandlin.

The resolution will have a final reading at the next City Council meeting.
