A man was sleeping on his couch when a sudden noise that sounded like an explosion jolted him awake. When he and his wife investigated, they discovered their living room window had been shattered. But what caused the damage was a mystery.
The incident happened in South Point, where a couple told Lawrence County deputies they heard the loud bang and initially checked inside their home before going outside to investigate.
That’s when they discovered broken glass scattered across the grass in front of the house. The upper portion of their living room window was shattered, with glass also scattered across the floor inside.
The deputy examined the damage, looking for anything that might explain what struck the window. He found no rocks, tree branches or other objects that appeared responsible.
There was another unusual detail. The window screen had been lifted approximately four to five inches from its original closed position.
Strange Noises Before the Broken Window
The couple told deputies they had experienced other unexplained disturbances in recent weeks.
They said someone had knocked on their door or banged against the side of their house, but whenever they checked, nobody was there.
The woman also recalled seeing a younger boy with blond hair running away from the house toward South Point Park several weeks earlier. She couldn’t identify him.
She mentioned another juvenile she believed might be capable of causing the damage, but neither she nor her husband witnessed anyone breaking the window.
Deputy Searches the Neighborhood
The couple did not have security cameras, so the deputy suggested checking whether neighbors might have footage that could help explain what happened.
He also drove through the surrounding neighborhood looking for anyone who might have been involved.
Near South Point Park, the deputy spotted overturned trash cans and broken glass pop bottles scattered along the street, but he did not locate anyone.
The deputy photographed the broken window, collected statements from the couple and documented the damage.
No suspect was identified, and the report does not establish what caused the window to shatter.
For the couple, the mystery remains: Was it connected to the earlier knocking and bang
