Lucasville Woman Charged in Baby’s Death
Scioto County Sheriff’s Deputies arrrested a 21-year-old woman on multiple serious charges on Wednesday in connection with the death of a baby.
Mahala Ann Hughes was booked into the Scioto County Jail on charges of 2 counts of involuntary manslaughter, 2 counts of endangering children, and one count of possession of a fentanyl-related compound.
The Sheriff’s Office says the charges stem from an investigation of an incident back on March 14.
Officers and EMS responded to a 7th Street home from a report that a woman had given birth in the home to a dead baby. The coroner sent the infant’s remains to Montgomery County for autopsy.
The Special Victims Unit started an investigation, collecting evidence at the scene and interviewing witnesses.
As a result of the investigation the case was presented to the Scioto County Grand Jury on Friday, April 14th, which resulted in a secret indictment warrant being issued. Officers took Hughes into custody on Wednesday.
Mahala Ann Hughes was arrested last month on a domestic violence charge and had two arrests in 2021, one for DUI and one for probation violation. She is currently held without bond at the Scioto County Jail.
Sheriff Thoroughman stated that this joint investigation is still ongoing and it could result in more charges being presented at a later date.
