Make A Homemade Mask – No Sewing

The Surgeon General is here to show you how to make a homemade mask using stuff you already have around the house. There’s no sewing required!

Yesterday, the CDC changed its mind and said that everyone should wear a mask when they go out. Not to much to keep you from catching Coronavirus but to prevent you from spreading it.

According to the CDC, “We now know from recent studies that a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus lack symptoms (“asymptomatic”) and that even those who eventually develop symptoms (“pre-symptomatic”) can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms.  This means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity—for example, speaking, coughing, or sneezing—even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms.  In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.”

The CDC is also making it clear that you should not wear surgical masks or N-95 respirators.  Those items are in short supply and need to be set aside for healthcare workers and first responders. In fact, any person or business that has any of these supplies is urged to contact the state and make them available to frontline COVID-19 responders.

Ohio’s first lady, Fran DeWine, was ahead of the game showing off patterns for sewing masks last week.  Now, Surgeon General  Dr. Jerome Adams is demonstrating how easy it is to make a face covering at home.

While masks are suggested by the CDC, wearing them is still voluntary. One suggestion I would make is to use elastic hair ties instead of the rubber bands used in the video. They’re covered in fabric and a lot more comfortable on the ears.
