Man Airlifted After Rarden Wheelchair Crash

Man airlifted after wheelchair crash

A report of a man falling from his wheelchair in the middle of the road in Rarden Township quickly turned into a major medical response Friday evening.

The initial call came in just before 5 p.m. with concern that the man may have suffered a broken hip.

Dispatch first tried to send Squad 10, but there was no response, so Squad 2 was paged to cover the call.

Firefighters were also requested for a possible lift assist.

Union Fire Department did not respond, so Otway firefighters were paged instead and headed to the scene.

Then the situation escalated.

Around 5:15 p.m., responders requested a medical helicopter.

Otway firefighters began setting up a landing zone at Otway Park while dispatch checked available aircraft.

MedFlight 1 responded from Chillicothe with an estimated arrival time of about 23 minutes. Air Evac had a longer estimated response time.

Squad 2 headed to the landing zone while Otway firefighters prepared the area for the helicopter.

MedFlight landed shortly before 6 p.m.

The patient was then flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital for treatment.

The available report does not give an update on his condition or confirm the exact nature of his injuries.
