A caller reported finding a man deceased on the bathroom floor of a 21st Street home.
EMS crews responded and confirmed the man had died.
Portsmouth police then contacted the Scioto County Coroner’s Office and arranged for the deceased to be transported. Officers also gathered information for a report.
The police log does not indicate foul play.
Why the Coroner Gets Called
A coroner responding to a death scene does not automatically mean police suspect a crime.
Coroners are commonly called when a death is unexpected, unattended, or happens outside a hospital or other setting where a doctor can immediately certify the cause of death.
That can include someone who has been seriously ill but dies at home without a physician present, a person who dies suddenly with no obvious explanation, or someone who is found deceased after living alone.
The coroner’s job is to help document the death and determine whether any further examination is needed.
In many cases, the eventual cause turns out to be natural.
In this case, the available report only says the man was found deceased, EMS confirmed the death, and the coroner was contacted. No cause of death was listed.
