Man Indicted on 44 Counts of Endangering Children 

The Scioto County Grand Jury returned a shocking indictment during its last session. 

They indicted a 61-year-old Lorian, Ohio man on 44 counts of endangering children and 14 counts of felonious assault. Daniel Cocarteu’s name doesn’t appear in searches of known Ohio offenders.

The Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office did not provide any details as to the reason for the indictment. He is not currently booked into the Scioto County Jail.

This is only the most recent in a string of indictments in the area involving crimes against children. Back in February, the grand jury indicted 36-year-old Nathaniel Fodge of Portsmouth for rape and an astonishing 54 counts of sexual battery as well as 54 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, and for endangering children.  

In December of last year, an indictment was returned against  John William Smith III, of Lucasville for three counts of rape after Scioto County Children Services contacted his office on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, to inform them that a child had been sexually assaulted. Detectives determined the victim was just 8 years old when the assaults occurred.  

Michael Leland Nether of Philo, Ohio, was also indicted on two counts of rape, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.    

Back in October, the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office was alerted that an adult had exchanged inappropriate images with a 12-year-old.  An area hospital notified the Sheriff’s Office that the child had been taken there for treatment.
