Man Says Ex Took Motorcycle

A man who came home from work to find his girlfriend gone says she didn't leave empty-handed. According to his complaint, she took his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, several other belongings and the motorcycle's title, which he claims she then transferred into her own name. The man contacted the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office to report the missing property and what he believed was an improper title transfer. According to the sheriff's report, the man said he had been in an on-again, off-again relationship with the woman. She had brought food to his residence, and the two had discussed plans for later that evening. He said everything seemed fine when he left for work. But when he returned home that afternoon, the woman was gone. So was his recently purchased Harley-Davidson. Motorcycle Title Allegedly Transferred Without Permission The man told deputies he had recently purchased the motorcycle but hadn't yet transferred the title into his name. He said the title was still open, bearing only the previous registered owner's signature. According to the complaint, the woman took that document, had it notarized and transferred the motorcycle into her own name without his permission. He also told deputies she had since listed the Harley-Davidson for sale on Facebook Marketplace. And the Motorcycle Wasn't All That Was Missing The man said the woman had also entered his truck and removed several personal belongings. His list of missing property included keys to a 2025 GMC Sierra, titles for two other vehicles, a 2008 GMC Sierra and a 1998 Honda CR-V, along with an 8-inch Android tablet and an Armstrong tablet. He also reported a 2015 Polaris RZR and a 2006 Jayco Jay Flight camper among the missing property. The man provided deputies with a written statement and said he would forward screenshots of the motorcycle's original Facebook Marketplace purchase, along with bank statements documenting the transaction. The sheriff's report was classified as a fraud complaint. It does not indicate that deputies recovered the property, made an arrest or independently verified the alleged title transfer. Why Vehicle Titles Matter A vehicle title is more than a piece of paperwork. It's a key document used to establish and transfer ownership. In Ohio, vehicle title transfers generally require the appropriate signatures and notarization. Leaving a signed title incomplete can create serious complications if the document falls into the wrong hands. Buyers should complete title transfers promptly and keep purchase records, payment documentation and copies of relevant paperwork. For this complainant, the dispute involves more than a missing motorcycle. He's alleging that someone used an unfinished title to claim ownership of a vehicle he says he purchased. Whether that allegation results in criminal charges remains to be seen.
