Scioto County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Shawnee Storage in Clay Township after a report of people climbing over a fence and throwing items over it.
The call came in around 1:40 am.
When a deputy arrived, he advised that he believed he spotted two people inside the gates.
Dispatch attempted to contact the monitoring company using the number on file, but the call went straight to voicemail.
Deputies eventually spoke with everyone involved, including the owner of the storage unit.
According to the sheriff’s office log, the people said they did not know they were not allowed to be there after dark.
They were advised to come back after sunrise.
No arrest was listed in the information provided.
A call like this is exactly why storage unit owners get nervous when someone is spotted climbing fences in the middle of the night. Even if the people involved have access to a unit, showing up after hours and tossing items over a fence can look a lot like a break-in.
It also creates a safety issue for deputies responding in the dark. They do not know at first whether they are dealing with a burglary, someone retrieving their own property, or something more serious.
In this case, deputies sorted it out without an arrest.
But the message was pretty clear: come back when the sun is up.
