A Taco Bell employee who called Portsmouth police to report her electric bicycle stolen ended up being arrested on an outstanding warrant, prompting officers to contact Children Services about her child.
Officers responded to the Gallia Street restaurant at approximately 3:30 a.m.
The woman said someone had taken her electric bicycle from a shed in the parking lot sometime between 2:30 and 3 a.m.
She described the bike as black with a blue stripe, the word “e-bike” written in white letters, and a large black battery.
While officers were investigating the theft, they discovered the woman had an active warrant through Butler County. Authorities there confirmed they were willing to extradite her, and Portsmouth police took her into custody.
With the child’s mother headed to jail, officers contacted Scioto County Children Services to make sure the child was cared for.
According to the police report, a Children Services worker planned to meet with the child at 8 a.m. and then go to the Scioto County Jail to speak with the mother.
Scioto County Children Services also contacted Jackson County Children Services because that agency already had an active case involving the family. The matter was then forwarded to Jackson County for follow-up.
The report did not indicate who was caring for the child at the time of the arrest or whether the stolen bicycle was recovered.
