Mom Says Daughter Wanted Her to Buy Heroin—Then Threatened to Burn Her Alive

A family trip home from jail allegedly ended with threats of arson, violence, and a fight over a pickup truck after a mother refused to drive her daughter to buy heroin. Deputies were called after a woman reported her daughter had threatened to kill her during an argument that began shortly after picking her up from jail. According to the report, the mother told deputies she had traveled to Huntington to pick up her daughter following her release from Western Regional Jail. The two stopped to eat before heading home. That's when, according to the mother, the situation took a dramatic turn. She told deputies her daughter wanted money to buy heroin and began making phone calls attempting to arrange a drug purchase. The mother said she refused. Instead of taking her daughter where she wanted to go, she crossed back into Ohio and drove home. According to the report, that decision sparked an explosive argument. The incident occurred in the South Point area. The mother told deputies her daughter threatened to burn the house down with her inside, bust out the windows of her car, slash the tires, and "smack the life out of" her. She also reported that her daughter drove away in a pickup truck despite being told not to take it. Although the truck had been purchased for the daughter, the vehicle was titled in the mother's name, according to the report. Rather than immediately recovering the truck himself, the investigating deputy located the homeowner where the daughter was staying and instructed him to have her return both the truck and the keys. The next day, deputies learned the truck had been returned. With the vehicle back in its owner's possession, deputies arrested Kimberly Spangler on outstanding warrants as well as charges related to allegedly threatening her mother. She was transported to the Lawrence County Jail. Threats Alone Can Be Criminal Under Ohio law, a person does not have to carry out a threat for criminal charges to be filed. Depending on the circumstances, threatening to seriously harm or kill another person—or threatening to destroy property—can result in charges if investigators believe the victim reasonably feared the threat would be carried out. In this case, deputies say the alleged threats, combined with the dispute over the truck and the outstanding warrants, led to the woman's arrest.
