Investigative efforts into the kidnapping of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie reached a fever pitch on Tuesday as authorities conducted a court-authorized search in the town of Rio Rico and released the first visual evidence of a suspect. The disappearance of the mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie has drawn national attention, including a response from the White House, as the family enters what they described as an “hour of desperation”.
Breakthrough in Surveillance Evidence
After days of technical difficulties with “back-end systems,” the FBI successfully recovered doorbell camera footage from Guthrie’s home in the Tucson foothills. The videos, totaling less than a minute, show a masked individual wearing a backpack and a handgun holster.
The subject appeared to be aware of the security measures, tilting their head away from the camera and attempting to obstruct the lens with a gloved hand and a plant ripped from the yard. FBI Director Kash Patel characterized the individual as “armed” and noted they had clearly “tampered with the camera”. While the footage does not show Nancy Guthrie herself, investigators hope the public can identify the suspect’s “girth, the shape of their face, potentially their eyes or mouth”.
Detention and Rio Rico Search
On Tuesday night, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI blocked off roads in Rio Rico, roughly 15 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, to execute a search warrant. This action followed a traffic stop south of Tucson where an individual was detained for questioning.
While authorities have not officially confirmed the identity or status of the person in custody, a Phoenix television station, KNXV-TV, interviewed a local delivery man who claimed he was the one detained. The man stated he was released after several hours of questioning and maintained his innocence, though law enforcement has not verified his account.
Timeline of Disappearance
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home on January 31, 2026. She was reported missing the following day after her doorbell camera was disconnected. Evidence found at the scene has already confirmed the severity of the situation; DNA tests identified blood found on her porch as belonging to Guthrie.
Authorities have expressed deep concern for her well-being, noting that while she is mentally sound, she has limited mobility and requires several medications to survive.
Family Appeals and National Response
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have made several emotional public appeals, shifting from hopeful messages to more cryptic statements regarding a ransom. In a video posted over the weekend, the family indicated they had received a message and were willing to pay for their mother’s safe return, stating, “This is the only way we will have peace”.
The case has reached the highest levels of government, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that President Donald Trump has viewed the surveillance footage with “pure disgust” and is urging the public to provide leads to the FBI. The FBI has since expanded its reach, posting digital billboards in major cities across California and Texas.
