A person caught attempting to help themselves to merchandise at Walmart’s self-checkout put up a fight when officers arrived to take them into custody.
Officers were called to the store after a woman tried using detached clearance tags to scan to pay for full-price items.
When officers arrived at the security office of the South Point store to arrest the woman, she became upset and said that store security had told her she could go home. She made a break for the office door, but a deputy had her sit back down.
When the officer advised the shoplifter of her rights, she tried to leave again. At that point, the officer tried to place her in handcuffs. According to the police report, the woman began to struggle with the officer and ignored repeated requests to lie down and put her hands behind her back.
The officer placed her in a headlock, but the woman continued to struggle. The officer pepper-sprayed the woman, but she continued to fight. The officer then drew a TASER and warned the woman that it would be used if she kept fighting.
She allowed the officer to cuff her, and the officer administered first aid to rinse the pepper spray from the woman’s eyes and face.
Another officer arrived at the store to assist, and they transported the woman to the Lawrence County Jail. Corrections officers found three knives, several loose Xanax, and seven used syringes in Lisa Hughes’s purse while they were booking her into the jail.
Officers arrested a second shoplifter with needles in her purse later in the day. That happened around 7 pm when security personnel spotted a woman leaving the store with several items stuffed in her purse.
An officer placed the woman into custody and found merchandise and two syringes in the woman’s purse. She admitted to having addiction issues. Deputies reported that the woman was fully cooperative as they arrested her and booked her into the Lawrence County Jail.
