You don’t hear this one every day.
Officers were called to a Lucasville nursing home after staff reported a man—freshly released from prison—had taken off and was heading down the road in a wheelchair.
For a few minutes, it looked like deputies might be tracking down an escape on wheels.
But before officers even arrived, staff called back with an update. They were able to talk him into turning around and coming back to the facility.
No chase needed this time.
According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, the man had just been released on parole after serving time for a robbery conviction that included a weapons specification. He had originally been sentenced to six years in prison and is now under supervision by the Scioto County Adult Parole Authority.
His record goes back further. In 2021, he was arrested in connection to a bank robbery in Austintown and charged with aggravated robbery and robbery, both carrying repeat violent offender specifications, along with having a weapon under disability.
That repeat offender status stemmed from an earlier case out of Mahoning County, where he had prior convictions for aggravated burglary and kidnapping.
For now, the 62-year-old isn’t in a cell—he’s serving out his time in a nursing home setting under parole supervision.
Even so, as this call shows… sometimes old habits are hard to roll away from.
