Scammers Target Portsmouth Resident

A Portsmouth resident nearly fell victim to a popular Internet scam.

She told police she was contacted by a man claiming to be from a loan company, and she filled out an application.

He told her he deposited $950 in her bank account to make sure the company had access, and once she sent the money back to him, the full amount of a $10,000 loan would be deposited in her bank.

In a classic scam move, he requested the money in the form of gift cards. She wisely contacted the actual lending company and was informed they had no record of her.

She wisely stopped talking to the scammer and closed her bank account before she lost any money.
