Peebles Man Mows Down Officer, Rams Police Car Head On During Chase

A Peebles man is behind bars facing an attempted murder charge after mowing down an officer during a raid by the U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force. That act resulted in a seriously injured officer being airlifted to a Columbus hospital. This incident mirrors a traffic stop back in February of last year where the same man was charged with assaulting an officer.

It all started on Friday morning when deputies from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and Pike County Sheriff’s Office assisted the U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force in serving outstanding warrants on 48-year-old Keith McGuin. Pike County had open warrants on the Peebles man for weapons charges.

When officers caught up with him in the 2300 block of Dry Bone Road in Pike County, he turned his vehicle around and used it as a weapon against law enforcement, intentionally hitting one of the task force members.

That’s when Pike and Scioto County Deputies opened fire on McGuin. McGuin then took off and drove through a fence and culvert to escape police.

U.S. Marshals loaded the injured officer into a vehicle and raced to meet an EMS squad. An air ambulance transported the officer to Grant Hospital in Columbus.

Pike County Deputies pursued McGuin, and were later joined by deputies from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. They chased McGuin through the county before trapping him on Beaver’s Ridge Road. McGuin intentionally rammed his vehicle head-on into a Pike County Sheriff’s car which ended the chase.

Deputies arrested McGuin, but his passenger Kasey Steven tried to take off on foot. Adams County Deputies quickly caught up with her.

Police say McGuin has a gun on him at the time of the arrest. Police added several new charges to his open warrants, including attempted murder and assault on a police officer.

His passenger, 31-year-old Kasey Stevens, faces charges of aggravated trafficking in drugs, possession of meth, and a probation violation.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are continuing the investigation, which may result in more charges.

McGuin was charged with failure to comply with the order of an officer and assaulting a law enforcement officer in February of last year. Those charges stemmed from a stop by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
