Francis “Pete” Cyrus, 78, of Lucasville, died Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at OSU Medical Center in Columbus. He was born May 10, 1943, in McDermott to the late Clyde and Clara (Roberts) Cyrus.
Pete was a 1962 graduate of Portsmouth High School, a veteran of the United States Air Force, and retired from USEC after working for 30 years, and even later worked for the Fernald Plant in Cincinnati. He loved to bowl and competed for years in the local bowling leagues.
In addition to his parents, Pete is preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Sam Cyrus. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol (Whisman) Cyrus, three brothers; Gary Cyrus of Columbus, Larry Cyrus of Iowa, and Glenn Cyrus (Tess) of Lake Mary, FL, a sister, Carol Smith (Larkin) of Colorado Springs, CO, a brother-in-law, Phil Whisman of Rosemount, four sisters-in-law, Louella Nelson of Springfield, Lynda Martin of Springfield, Linda Whisman of Portsmouth, and Junnie Whisman of Wheelersburg. Uncle Pete is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Scott Whisman (Paula) of Rosemount.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Pastor Darrell Nickles officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace, where graveside burial rites will be provided by the American Legions, Post #622 James Irwin/ Post #363 William Baker.
A visitation for friends and relatives will be 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday, September 17, 2021, at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home, and again on Saturday, one hour before the service.
