Pharmacy Tech Spots Fake Prescriptions

An eagle-eyed pharmacy tech spotted someone calling in fake prescriptions.

A caller claiming to be from a local doctor’s office called in a prescription for 405 800mg Gabapentin pills. When the tech questioned the number of pills in the prescription, the caller said the patient was going on a trip to Canada.

The tech noticed that the same patient already had the same prescription called in by another doctor and covered by Medicaid. When the tech checked with the doctor listed on the prescription, he said he didn’t have any patients by that name, and his office hadn’t called in any prescriptions.

The pharmacy discovered they had previously filled two prescriptions from the same caller for different patients.

An investigation revealed that all of those patients had prior prescriptions for Neurontin and Gabapentin, and they all had the same associate in common. Officers viewed the store security video and identified their suspect picking up the prescriptions.

The matter is still under investigation.
