A worried mom contacted police at 7:30 pm to report that two pit bulls were running loose on Franklin Avenue and had attempted to bite her children.

When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke to the dogs’ owner. She said the animals had accidentally escaped from the yard, and she would make sure it didn’t happen again.

Stray Dogs on Gallia Street

A Gallia Street man contacted police just after 1 am to report stray dogs had repeatedly come onto his property. He told police he was concerned his dog might hurt the stray animals.

Officers noted his dog was contained in his backyard and under his control. They told him that if strays come onto the property and his dog injures them, he would not be in any legal trouble.

The strays left before police arrived, but they told him to contact the Portsmouth Health Department to report the stray dog issue.

Child Chased By Dog on 18th Street

Just after 3 pm, officers responded to a report of a child attacked by a dog on 18th Street.

When police arrived on the scene, they discovered that a bulldog had gotten loose from a High Street home and jumped on a child knocking her down.

The animal then chased the child and knocked her down again. The dog did not bite the child.

Police said they had been called to the area multiple times about issues with the dog. An officer spoke to the owner who they said didn’t seem to care about their warning not to allow the animal to run free.

Police told them they would contact animal control.
