Portsmouth Police fought hard to get area overpasses salted after a series of accidents and officers found children at the scene of an overdose. We break down the highlights from the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Briefing.
Under The Influence
- At 12:30 am, officers arrested a man on Gallia Street. Police charged him with OVI after a vehicle stop. They took him to OSP Post 73 for a sobriety test and then booked him at the police station. PPD arranged for his vehicle to be towed. Officers released him to his wife around 2:30 am.
- A caller reported a woman an apparently high woman behind the Aldi on Gallia. She was pushing a cart and talking to herself. Police caught up with her at the Speedway and offered assistance.
Hey That’s My Stuff!
- A Grant Street Caller reported someone attempting to break into cars around 2 am. Officers could not locate the suspect.
- New Boson police recovered a stolen license plate at 11:48 am. Police returned the plates to the rightful owner.
Suspicious Activity

- Just after 5 am, police responded to 8th Street for a report of a man standing in a field screaming and stripping off his clothes.
- At 5:17, PPD received a report of a man screaming near the Young Street Overpass. Officers are familiar with the troubled man and took information for a report.
Officers Fight To Get Overpasses Salted
At 5:08 am, officers witnessed a crash on the Young Street Overpass. They offered assistance at the scene.
About 7 minutes later, police assisted in locating a woman who crashed on the Sciotoville Overpass. Police found her at Walmart. She did not need assistance.
Just before 6 am, PPD units blocked vehicles from using the Young Street Overpass due to icy conditions.
A truck slid on the ice on the US 52 Overpass just before 7 am. A tow truck removed it from the scene.
Around 7 am, officers attempted to get the overpasses salted. However, service told them they had just finished treating them and there was no point in doing it again.
Police called again at 7:19 to request salt on the Chillicothe Street Overpass. Service told police the trucks were preparing to head back out.
There was a third crash on the RT. 52 overpass at 7:30 am. Officers called again and asked for salt. Police reported another vehicle sliding at 8:08 am. Police complained because the overpass was still untreated.
Aggravating Boyfriend
Officers answered a call to Walnut Street at 11 am. A woman said her boyfriend moved his stuff out and was not sitting on the back porch aggravating her.
Police advised her she’d have to go through civil court to evict him.
Frequent Guest
A woman who has nearly daily contact with police officers agreed to meet up with them at the station to receive her latest summons to court just before noon.
Gun, Bullets, and a Dagger
Employees at a local rehab notified police they found a gun, bullets, and a dagger in a patient’s room and wanted to turn in the weapon.
Officers impounded the weapon.
Kids at Scene of Overdose
Police and CPS came to the assistance of children at the scene of a suspected overdose just before 1:30 pm.
Officers answered a call about an unconscious woman with a needle in her arm. Medics at the scene asked for PPD and CPS.
CPS cleared them to be released to a person who already was supposed to have custody. Officers also contacted the woman’s probation officer.
PMHA Parking Problems
Police continued their Wayne Hills parking crackdown by citing a vehicle for parking on a Wayne Avenue sidewalk at 8 pm.
At 7:12 pm, they issued a citation to a vehicle on Kendall for parking in a handicapped space.
Twenty minutes later, they cited another Wayne Avenue vehicle for parking on the Sidewalk.
Missing Person?
A 17th Street man contacted police at 11 pm to report his wife left to go tanning in the morning and had not returned. Police took information for a report.
