Portsmouth After Midnight: Dumpster Diving, Drunk Teens, Fireworks, and Warrants

Portsmouth police stayed busy after midnight with calls involving people inside a fenced business area, a woman wanted on warrants, loud teens in the road, fireworks complaints, a domestic disturbance, a felony warrant arrest, and a trash fire. The first call came in at midnight at Tsunami Express Car Wash on Gallia Street. Police responded after a report that three people had gone through the gate at the car wash. When officers arrived, they found three adults going through the dumpster behind a fence with a posted “No Trespassing” sign. Officers had the group clean up the mess and move along. Police also advised them that if they wanted to gather items from the business dumpster, they needed written permission because the area was posted. A few minutes later, officers spoke with a woman at Speedway just down the street and discovered she had an open warrant. Portsmouth police contacted New Boston Police, who responded to the scene and served the warrant. New Boston officers arrested the woman on two counts of failure to appear and booked her into the Scioto County Jail. About five minutes after that, police received a report of a large group of drunken teens in the road in Wayne Hills. The caller said the group was screaming at a 14-year-old girl who was also drunk and in the road. However, by the time officers arrived, the group had dispersed. Around 1 a.m., police responded to Sycamore Street for a report of loud fireworks. The caller said it was an ongoing problem with the same people and that they had video if officers needed it. Police spoke with two people accused of setting off fireworks and explained the rules about when and where fireworks can be used. Officers gave them what the report described as a first and final warning. At approximately 3 a.m., officers responded to Grant Street after a caller reported hearing a man and woman arguing and what sounded like a man slapping a woman. Police spoke with everyone involved and said the dispute was verbal only. The people involved agreed to separate for the night. At 3:44 a.m., officers spotted a man with an open felony warrant in an alley on the north side of Charles Street. Police took Joey Hunt into custody on a failure to appear charge and booked him into the Scioto County Jail. Hunt appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court the next morning and was appointed a public defender on a receiving stolen property charge. At 3:55 a.m., police and firefighters responded to 3rd Street after a caller reported something burning in the alley. Firefighters arrived and put out a trash fire. By 4 a.m., Portsmouth police had handled a little bit of everything: trespassing, warrants, drunk juveniles, fireworks, domestic trouble, and fire in an alley.
