Portsmouth residents were shaken awake when loud gunshot-like sounds echoed through the night—but were they bullets or just a case of late-night fireworks?
At 12:07 a.m., concerned neighbors on Grant Street called police, reporting what they believed were gunshots. Multiple officers rushed to the scene, searching for any signs of violence. But after scanning the area, they found nothing suspicious.
At nearly the same time, residents near 3rd and Brown Street also dialed 911, reporting similar loud bangs. Again, officers searched the area, but the mystery continued—no shell casings, no damage, and no witnesses.
Police say it’s possible the sounds were just fireworks, but with gun violence a real concern, officers take every report seriously.
What to Do If You Hear Gunshots
Listen Closely – Gunshots have a distinct “pop” sound and often echo in urban areas. Fireworks tend to have a lingering sizzle or crackle.
Take Cover – If you believe the shots are real, get inside, stay low, and away from windows.
Call 911 – Never assume someone else has reported it. Give a clear location and describe the sound if possible.
Be a Good Witness – If safe, note how many shots you heard, any vehicles speeding away, or suspicious activity.
Let Police Investigate – Even if it turns out to be fireworks, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
Residents are urged to stay vigilant—because whether it’s gunfire or pyrotechnics, Portsmouth doesn’t need any unwanted late-night booms!
