Portsmouth Police and Children’s Services Working Together

A few weeks ago, we spoke with Children’s Services Director Jason Mantell. One of the subjects discussed was the importance of a good working relationship with local law enforcement.

Director Mantell said the agency’s relationship with law enforcement is extremely important. “We live in a world and a county where adults sometimes make poor decisions. Sometimes those adults are supposed to be caring for children.”

Mantell says he’s been able to sit down with both Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman and Portsmouth Police Chief Debby Brewer. “Both have been wonderful. We have a good relationship with the New Boston Police which we can see from the back of our agency. We just want to make sure we are all on the same page.”

From the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing, we can see that significant improvements are being forged between the agencies.

Safety Plan

Just before 11 am, a caller reported people sitting in a blue van in the alley off Campbell Avenue. The adults were allegedly shooting up and had kids in the van with them.

Police discovered the people arguing in the alley and contacted Children Services. A CPS caseworker worked out a safety plan with the parents.

CPS Steps In After Mom Flips Out In ER

A mother flipped out at the SOMC ER after she claimed staff assaulted her child. When officers arrived at 10:51 pm, they found her incoherent and yelling.

Police took her into custody and she began to bang her head on the window of the police cruiser.

PPD contacted CPS and they worked out a safety plan for her children to go to their grandmother’s house.

Officers said she injured her head banging it against the cruiser and also tested positive for marijuana and fentanyl. She was admitted back to the hospital as a patient and issued a summons.
