Portsmouth Police responded to the scene after a woman crashed her Jeep in Portsmouth, Ohio after swerving to miss a dog in the road. Officers also looked into a lot of suspicious activity and broke up a few fights on Wednesday. We break down the highlights.
Alarming Situation
- Just after 12:30, a commercial alarm sounded on Gallia Street. The responding officer said everything appeared secured and the doors were locked.
- At 2 am, another commercial alarm sounded at The Scioto Ribber. Again, everything checked out secure.
- A home alarm went off on Charles Street at 12:17 pm. The homeowner informed police it was an accident.
- At 4:21 pm, a garage door alarm sounded on Front Street. It was a false alarm.
Suspicious Individuals
- A caller notified police at 5:45 am of suspicious persons on a Walnut Street porch. He said someone contacted him and informed him of the problem. The man said no one should be at the location and requested an officer to check it out.
- Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man in a hoody carrying a backpack on Grant Street at 8:06 am. The caller said the man kept looking in cars and acted suspiciously. Police said the man was dumpster diving. He allowed officers to search him. They found nothing.
- Police answered a report of a suspicious person at Gallia and Campbell Avenue just after 11 am. They picked up a man with an open warrant from Portsmouth Municipal Court. He had tools and electronic items on his person.
- A caller reported two women and a man staying in the shed of an 8th Street house. Police advised them to leave.
- Police responded to a report of a theft from a vehicle on Gay Street at 12:27 pm. The caller said a kid stole a backpack containing a wallet from a vehicle. Someone later attempted to use the card at the Dollar General. The bank blocked the attempt.
- Just after 3 pm, a Grandview Avenue resident reported a garage break-in. Police took information for a report.
- A Gilbert Avenue resident reported a stolen Chromebook at 5:56 pm. Police took information for a report.
- At 8 pm, a woman called to report her vehicle stolen. She said a family friend took it without permission around 11 am and then crashed it in New Boston. The vehicle was impounded.
Missed The Dog, Hit The Wall
A dog is blamed for a crash involving a Jeep on the Scioto Trail in Portsmouth, Ohio. Police say a woman swerved to miss an animal that ran in front of her Jeep just after 7:30 am at the intersection of 24th Street and the Trail.
She crashed into a wall. Officers reported minor damage to the passenger-side door and tire.
Lost In The Road
An officer came to the aid of a gentleman who got a little lost on Gallia Street. The man, who didn’t speak English well, attempted to find Hutchins Street but got turned around.
He stopped at the intersection of Gallia and Offnere and blocked traffic while he tried to figure out where he went wrong.
The officer helped get him going in the right direction.

Cry For Help
A woman requested a welfare check just before 3 pm. She said her boyfriend texted her about suicidal thoughts and she believed he was at a local park. An officer responded to the scene but could not locate the boyfriend.
Can’t We All Just Get Along?
Police responded to a report of two women and a man fighting in front of a 5th Street home at 9:30 pm. By the time police arrived, all parties had left the scene.
Ten minutes later, officers answered a call for a fight behind the Silver Palace on Gallia. Two women were fighting. Officers advised them to calm down.
