Pregnant Woman Kicked Out of Rehab — Then Arrested on Her Way Out

A pregnant woman being discharged from a drug treatment facility ended up in jail after deputies said she repeatedly disrupted other residents’ treatment sessions and resisted an officer trying to escort her out. During the ride to jail, she also reported that she had been sexually assaulted the night before, prompting a separate investigation. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies were called to The Land of Goshen treatment facility after the woman reported that she felt threatened by staff members who were watching her pack her belongings. Staff told the deputy that she had been argumentative throughout the morning and had refused to sign a behavior contract. According to the report, she then chose to be discharged. A staff member also reported that the woman had threatened her but said she did not want to pursue charges. The woman told the deputy that she had been ordered into treatment by a court in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The report does not explain how her discharge would affect that court order. Attempts to Find a Ride Turn Into an Arrest The deputy instructed the woman to pack her belongings and leave. She began making arrangements for a ride back to Charleston, but the deputy said she continued yelling and using obscenities during a lengthy phone call. Other residents were attending treatment sessions at the time. After several warnings about the disruption, the deputy asked staff whether they wanted the woman barred from the property. Staff agreed, and the deputy told her she was being trespassed and needed to finish packing and leave. According to the report, she became more upset and continued the behavior despite additional warnings. The deputy then placed her under arrest for disorderly conduct. Because the woman was pregnant, the deputy said he did not handcuff her. Instead, he took her arm to escort her to the cruiser. The deputy reported that she tensed her body and refused to walk with him. When they reached the stairs, he said she attempted to throw herself down them. He reported that he was able to stop her and escort her safely to the cruiser. She was also charged with resisting arrest. Sexual Assault Allegation Reported During Transport Before leaving, the deputy arranged for the woman’s medication to accompany her to jail. Treatment center staff said they would hold her remaining belongings for 30 days so they could be picked up. During the trip to the Lawrence County Jail, the woman told the deputy she had been sexually assaulted the previous night. The deputy contacted a detective sergeant, who said he would follow up with her about the allegation. The report provides no further details about the alleged assault or where it occurred. The woman was booked into the Lawrence County Jail on disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges pending arraignment in Ironton Municipal Court.
