Public Library Hosts “Artsy Fartsy 5K” — A Wacky, Colorful Run Just for Kids

The Portsmouth Public Library is getting ready to launch the most colorful, silly, and fun-filled race of the summer! On Tuesday, June 3rd, from 5 to 7 PM, the Portsmouth Library will host the “Artsy Fartsy 5K Run”, an energetic, no-pressure event created especially for children ages 12 and under.

But don’t expect serious running shoes or stopwatches here—this isn’t your typical 5K.

“We’ve taken the idea of a traditional 5K and turned it on its head,” said a library spokesperson. “Think bubbles, dancing, frog jumps, silly walks, sprinkles of color, and all-around goofiness. It’s a race where having fun is the only goal!”

Children are encouraged to wear white, because by the end of the event, they’ll be covered in vibrant splashes of color—turning them into walking works of art. While only kids 12 and under can participate in the race, spectators of all ages are welcome to come cheer, laugh, and enjoy the show.

Why Fun & Movement Matter

Beyond the laughs and colorful chaos, events like the “Artsy Fartsy 5K” promote something really important: physical activity and creative play.

Health experts say that kids need at least an hour of physical activity each day, but in a world full of screens and busy schedules, getting that exercise can be a challenge. That’s why active play—especially the kind that doesn’t feel like “exercise”—is so valuable.

“When kids are moving their bodies and having fun, they’re not just getting stronger physically. They’re also building confidence, social skills, and creative thinking,” said one local youth educator.

Fun & Simple Ways to Get Moving at Home

Can’t make the event? No problem! There are plenty of ways to bring some silly, healthy fun into your own backyard or living room. Try these:

The Artsy Fartsy 5K reminds us all that fitness doesn’t have to be serious—sometimes, the best way to get moving is to add a little music, a splash of color, and a whole lot of fun.

So grab your sneakers (and maybe a towel), and get ready for an evening of laughter, movement, and messy memories your kids won’t forget.
